¡¶The Light that begins in my broken place¡·

Curated by Minhee Kim

We go through countless fractures of emotion throughout our lives - loneliness, anxiety, nostalgia, anger, love, and even the quiet mysteries of life and a longing for freedom. These emotions slip into the seams of our days, sometimes breaking us and at other times leaving behind the strength to live again. Han Jaehoon¡¯s paintings hold these fragments of feeling, visualizing them as landscapes that breathe like a diary, like a pulse, capturing what passes through him.

The landscapes he paints are not real places. They arise from the residue of memory, a fleeting sensation, a shadow of thought - imagined emotional terrains shaped by the echoes that remain. His images feel abstract yet strangely familiar, holding small and ineffable moments of beauty, like the brief glimmer that appears within something broken.

Blue is one of the artist¡¯s emotional languages, carrying quietness and unease, melancholy and consolation at once. Inspired by Matthew Wong¡¯s blues and Picasso¡¯s Blue Period, the color surfaces in Han¡¯s work with a different resonance. If Wong painted loneliness as an eternal landscape, Han paints the movement of emotion toward light - a passage rather than a destination. His works do not stay in solitude; they follow the trembling, passing, and blooming of feeling, carrying the direction of healing.

His process follows the pace of his emotions. To capture the immediacy of a passing moment, he works intuitively with fast-drying acrylics, transferring raw emotion directly onto the canvas. What remains is the vivid trembling of feeling and the sincerity of something unfiltered. For the artist, painting is not merely a finished result. It is a daily diary of understanding life.

This exhibition marks Han Jaehoon¡¯s first solo show, the first moment in which five years of solitary emotional records meet the world. Opening at the end of the year, it invites us to witness how fractures of emotion can lead toward light. When the broken pieces of the heart reflect one another and create a new landscape, we come to realize that the light beginning in a broken place has already been quietly blooming within each of us. May viewers encounter their own empty spaces and discover the small light rising from within. This exhibition is the confession of one artist, and at the same time, a story shared by all of us.
