Humorous spirits
One of the spiritual bases of Korean culture is Shamanism, though the historical beginning of Shamanism is unknown. A shaman acts as a connection between the spirits and the physical world. Shamanism pursues the expulsion of demons using the various incantation devices and colorful pictorial representations of tigers, etc., which are the symbols of Animalism. By means of an exorcism, the good or ills and the fortunes of human beings, especially current difficulties, are resolved using some kind of divine power. These traditional beliefs were widely held across Korea in the past. Shamans could easily be found conducting ceremonies. However, these beliefs have faded in modern Korean society. Meekyung Jang¡¯s work resurrects these traditional Korean beliefs and strives to give form to these powerful symbols and the sense of fortune that they convey. Meekyung found inspiration through a number of traditional Korean sources, primarily the 12 earthly gods (Chinese Zodiac), colorful roof painting (dancheong), and the dolls that adorned the elaborately decorated coffins of the royalty. These mystical works are like characters in children¡¯s stories and folk tales, but with humorous twists. For instance, a Siberian tiger is shown with a gruesome face that is humorously portrayed as the size of a house dog. In some paintings, the face of a tiger looks like the black face of a seal. Some pieces feature a chicken on the back of a tiger with its beautiful feathers alongside a boy with a bright face. Here, the chicken is communicating with heaven, the tiger is expelling a demon, and the boy is guiding us to somewhere fascinating. As a result, her ceramic art expresses strong, friendly human relationships. Though her imagery is situated in traditional themes of death and darkness and the Shamanistic animals associated with such themes, her humorous, bright depictions of anthropomorphized animals associated with these representations subvert these meanings. These themes are normally associated with dark spaces and demonic influences, but her works should not be positioned so. Her works are best viewed as light and positive and should be positioned as such within their environment, in areas full of life.
